Hi Folks,

I am back after what seems like ages!! … Been busy and hence was in no frame of mind to complete any singing … here goes … recorded today … hot off my home studio press!.

This song is from the tamil movie ‘Noolveli’ by KB Balachander which I remember seeing long long time ago!. This song always captivated me from my early days. Although I am not 100% happy with this outcome I think it is worth uploading as I think it will narrowly miss burning your ears!.

Hope you like this timeless melody by the King of Music, the great MSV, and his genius SPB, who renders this so perfectly in his style which is very hard to decipher!.

I think, like I said, I am just about happy with this cut of mine, but could be a touch better in some places. I will leave you to hopefully enjoy and give me your feedback.

Although we received this song some 28 years ago, I still cannot get over it!.

Kavidhai Paadu Kuyile Kuyile! - Welcoming 2010

I am excited with the arrival of 2010!!!.
A very very very HappY NeW YeaR to you ALL!.

I thought I would post a song to usher in the New Year with a song that would hopefully cheer you all into new-found happiness … let’s wipe the slate and start again folks!. Let’s go for it!. Ha ha … can you sense I am happy?! Wow can’t wait!.

I have not posted for ages due to voice problems (Mr. Sinus et’al, and let me not go into the gory details!). Suffice to say that I feel somewhat comfortable now after doing some sensible things like breathing exercises … yes folks, I am learning to breathe again and my throat is free of puncturing coughs (for how long I do not know). OK, sorry for the long whinge here but you get the jist … I am alive and kicking … never say die!. (who’s a drama King now!).

Anyway this song is about a New Beginning for all the young and youthful. Maestro Ilayaraaja has his own style … after singing this song a few times I realised that it actually conformed to the Madhyamavathi scale and masterfully done by the one and ONLY IR. His BGMs are something else!. SPB has done a great job with his awesome voice in this evergreen number.

Without mentioning names, I want to thank the caring friends here who urged me to record and post after a long time and thanks a lot for your patience too!.

Anyway here goes my humble submission to usher in the New Year!. Recorded and posted today, on this memorable day!.

~ Kannan Amudhu - Song about Draupati ~

Another song from my Kannan Amudhu (2004). This is Song 4 from the album.

For the benefit of non-tamil speaking friends, here is what this song is about:

Sthaayi (Opening):
It says that Krishna will not enter everybody’s heart and it is not easy to get his blessing. However, Draupati was a great devotee of Krishna and this song is about her utter faith in Him.

Antara 1:
Highlights how the Paandavaas lost their kingdom and then Draupati itself to the Gauravaas through gambling. At that time Draupati was shamed but her faith in Krishna was undeniable. He protected her at that hour and everybody was amazed!.

Antara 2:
Krishna came to see the Paandavaas during their exile in the forest. He appeared without notice and said he was hungry!. Draupati had no food to offer him and in her search she found only one grain of rice from the bottom of the bowl. She decided to offer this with great devotion and affection to Krishna. Krishna was very moved and blessed her and happily ate it and his hunger was gone! He blessed her and appeased the hunger of thousands of Duruvasa’s disciples when they came to her as guests. (Duruvasa is the great Sage said to be the incarnation of Shiva).

RKB told me that this raag is his own raag and he has named it Hemamallar!. Apparently it resembles Raag Madhuvanthi but there are some subtle variations. Only God knows what I did to it!!.

~ A song from my Kannan Amudhu Album ~

Hi friends,

A few years ago, I made my first musical album of 10 original songs composed by Thiru. Rajkumar Bharathi, the well known carnatic musician. He was kind enough to compose and arrange all the music for this production of mine. I was the total amateur among his group of very esteemed carnatic musicians who have played BGMs for this album. I felt very honoured singing this and it came out in South India as the album called “Kannan Amudhu”.

I am convinced to this date that I could not perform to the level expected by carnatic musicians but nevertheless I tried my best and it was only my own private album, which RKB was kind enough to approve.

The theme of this album is Krishna’s life history, from his birth to Him giving us the Geeta. This was my own concept and there are 10 songs in this album. All of the songs were sung by me under the guidance of RKB, the great grandson of none other than our beloved Bharathiyaar!.

I present below the song here that narrates Kannan going to Dhuriyodhana to avoid the WAR. But alas that could not be prevented. If you know tamil you will enjoy the lyrics. The lyrcis were written by RKB’s son Niranjan Bharathi.

I have to say that since this album was released nearly 5 years ago, I have not had the opportunity to go for more recordings due to personal reasons. Hopefully, I will be part of some album in the near future.

Took a easy one to hopefully ease into some kind of form, after a very slow recovery with my throat!.

A simple yet catchy hit tune by T. Rajender sung by SPB … I think the film was a big hit too at that time.

I play the keyboard a bit and here goes an instrumental version of this song using my Yamaha keyboard. I got inspired after listening to Tailgunner and wanted to try it out myself.

The voice I chose on the keyboard was a rock guitar as I thought it suited well for this song.

When philosophy mixes with Ilayaraaja's music it is sure to move us!. However, this one could be mistaken for a MSV composition too!. Thanks to Sowmya for suggesting this song that she likes a lot!. "After a bit of a gap, I got hold of this racy track and started to gel with it .. and so here it is .. Namma MSV/SPB paatu from the hit movie Ninaithaaley Inikkum. The track is not the original but does the job pretty well and at a tempo which is slightly faster than the original. If you like spicy dishes you might well dig into this one!!.

Here is a little riddle: MSV has very cleverly composed it in a scale that you will not even guess initially, because of the racy nature of the song. Can you identify this raga (scale) name? Both north and south classical have their names for this scale.

Hi Friends,

Managed to record this yesterday and thought it was safe to post without major harm to precious ears!!.

OK I am still stuck in the MSV & IRR era .. no apologies for that!. Just love IRR's BGMs more than the actual song in this one. What a miracle it is to hear!. The harmonies in this song are simply awesome to hear with so many runs of high and low strings. You can really hear the 60 member rich orchestra in this one. The sound engineer must have had a field day mixing all this!. This is truly a masterpiece.

As this is a happy stage song (acted by 'Mic Mohan' in the movie!) I felt free and at liberty to adopt whatever came to me; in fact a few 'accidents' happened along the way and I decided to just let them be!.

What can I say about this moving melody which tells a story!.Truly an awesome song that is a favourite of many, including me.This is a MSV's gem that would have even moved the Gods I am sure!.

This song has such a captivating melody that it really does not matter even if the K-track is not all that good, as in this case. Hopefully you will enjoy it....feel free to leave your comments!.

This song always intrigued me .. so here goes a male rendition of it after some tinkering with the words. Hope you like it!.
I sang everything twice and made a chorus feel for the song….a sort of a male reply to the female version!.

MSV as usual has composed a gem and Vani Jayaram has made it her own song .. truly a great evergreen hit.

Pining Melody !!

When Ilayaraja composed this great melody, it reached it rightful owners, namely SPB and Janaki.
This song is a divine blend of melody and great voices. I remember SPB once said on stage that he was really lucky to get such great melodies from the Maestro and considered such songs to be a singer's boon!. What more can be said?!.

This song is a precise melody and a stumble over its smooth-flowing phrases seems all to inevitable if proper care is not taken. Sowmya who has sung the female part of this song has mastered the intricacies of this song well and kudos to her for a great rendition.

This song belongs to five geniuses..the music director, lyricist, singer, film director and the actor. Set in the 'renaissance era of tamil cinema', heroes like Kamal and Rajini cemented their extraordinary talent with such songs. The sheer passion at work creates a synergy that lifts even a humble black and white film to great heights. The other song "Ilakkanam Maarudho" in this movie is also a gem.

The great MSV is a master craftsman in whose hands was the 'putty' of expression for any given scenario. When MSV composes such master pieces, a life experience can be felt as if landed straight from heaven!. These are much more than mere songs!!.

Such songs are evergreen to the ear, and apparently easy to sing .. but nothing could be further from the truth!. Like a fine piece of diamond jewellery that captures your attention and hides its intricacies, this song too has the captivating sparkle that shrouds its inner intricacies .. you really have to tear yourself away from the song to look into its inner beauty .. wherein you will find the vocal expression and amazing musical embellishments.

Hope I have done justice to such a wonderful masterpiece.

Majestic Melody - Deivam thantha MSV

I remember when I was in India, this song was a big hit sung by the golden voice of Yesudas. Such melodies are rare and so is the musical genius of MSV. This song was so good that 'Vicks' triangular throat lozenges were advertised using this song; it inspired all and sundry to take up singing armed with nothing but a packet of 'Vicks' and the lyrics of Kannadasan!.

Jokes apart, this song coupled with its philosophical mood was a great number of its times and unparalleled even to this day. I cannot imagine anyone composing such great melodies today .. the greatness of MSV is for all to hear in this song .. there cannot be a better tune for the lyrics at hand and this shows how inspired MSV must have been by the lyrics of Kannadasan. MSV has often said that the tune is in the lyrics and his job was only to find it!. This is one such song!.

This is my humble attempt at singing this all time hit. The melody shifts in this song are truly lovable .. starts in a minor scale and shifts to a major scale in the charanams giving a majestic melody that has to be sung with care and precision and expression for the lyrics at hand. It was almost impossible for me to do full justification to all these aspects and this is one song that I will never be satisfied with, no matter how many times I sing it.

I recorded this song in one swipe as a "live" recording .. no changes to the mix etc. were possible after the recording. In fact I would recommend others to try this too as you waste less time doing the "massaging" later and more importantly, it forces you to sing the whole song as correctly as possible in one stroke like you would perform it live (which is what I did). The track music of this song is good enough but I would have loved a better track as some instrument pieces did not shine through well. All in all it was a decent result from my point of view and as I felt this recording was worth keeping, I am posting it here as my first sung song in this blog. Hopefully there is more to come soon and I will try!.
